The past week was a full week of training at CFD. The past week was a full week of training at CFD. Our members trained with our mutual aid partners from Mashpee and COMM Fire on Tuesday. On Thursday, we had the pleasure of hosting ten high school students from Barnstable, Mashpee, and Cape Cod Tech. With the aid of a smoke machine, and house scheduled for demolition, we provided training in fire suppression, search, self rescue, and ventilation all in zero visibility.
With the arrival of cooler weather, precipitation, With the arrival of cooler weather, precipitation, and increased humidity, the ban on outdoor cooking fires has been lifted. This includes fires associated with fire pits, chimineas, outdoor fireplaces, and cooking and heating equipment that are not specifically covered under 310 CMR 7.07, the Open Burning regulation. Open burning as covered under 310 CMR 7.07 (yard brush/forestry debris) is still limited to January 15 to May of each year and requires appropriate weather conditions. Please always use caution when kindling a fire. Keep fires away from structures and have a means to extinguish the fire.

Working with our neighboring communities through the cape’s strong mutual aid system is crucial to effective fire suppression and the protection of life and property.

Our high school intern program is vital to the growth of the fire service on the cape and islands and the continued protection of our village and surrounding communities.
Given the current and expected weather conditions, Given the current and expected weather conditions, the Cotuit Fire is prohibiting outdoor burning until further notice. This includes fires associated with fire pits, chimineas, outdoor fireplaces, and cooking and heating equipment that are not specifically covered under 310 CMR 7.07, the Open Burning regulation. This Ban is due to the unprecedented weather conditions that we have been experiencing and will continue to experience through at least this Friday. The lack of rain, low humidity, and wind conditions create favorable conditions for wildfires to spread. We also urge everyone to use extra caution and appropriate containment when disposing of fireplace/woodstove ashes and smoking materials.

The members of the department built a firefighting prop for our young supporters and participated in the Cotuit Library Olympic Hunger Games. Afterwards they were recognized by the Kettleers, and our recent high school intern was selected to throw the first pitch.

The Cotuit Fire Department is pleased to announce The Cotuit Fire Department is pleased to announce that we have been awarded a $27,159.04 grant to purchase a Lucas Chest Compression System. We were notified by FEMA this morning of the award through FEMA’s Assistance to Firefighters Grants (AFG) Program. The grant will allow both ambulances to be equipped with this life saving system and also ensure that we have a back up device if the unit on the primary ambulance has to be down for service.

The Town of Barnstable has opened two cooling centers for you to get out of the heat Hyannis Youth & Community Center 141 Bassett Lane, Hyannis 8:00AM - 8:00PM Barnstable Adult Community Center 825 Falmouth Road, Hyannis 8:30AM - 4:30PM Please be safe and follow these tips to stay cool! 🕶Slow down and avoid strenuous activity. 🕶Avoid outdoor exercising and other physical activity when it is very hot. Instead, find someplace you can be active while staying cool indoors. 🕶Drink plenty of water, juices or drinks that contain electrolytes– even if you are not thirsty! Avoid alcohol and caffeinated beverages. If your doctor has directed you to limit your liquids, ask what you should do when very hot. 🕶Stay indoors as much as possible and limit exposure to the sun. Use AC and fans to stay cool. Avoid using stove and oven, keep shades, blinds or curtains closed during hottest part of day. 🕶If you must go outdoors, use a broad– spectrum sunscreen, SPF 15 or higher and reapply throughout the day. Wear a hat , protective clothing and sunglasses. Wear lightweight, loose fitting, light– colored clothing. Natural fabrics such as cotton may feel cooler than synthetic fibers. 🕶Never leave children or pets alone in a closed vehicle. 🕶Practice Water Safety if cooling off around bodies of water. 🕶Know symptoms of and watch for heat related illnesses. Headache, confusion, dizziness or nausea could be sign of a heat– related illness. Go to the doctor or to an emergency room if concerned you need treatment. Call 911 in emergency. 🕶If power outages during warm weather, take additional precautions and go to a cooling center. Do NOT leave kids or pets in the car ☀️It only takes a car 10 minutes to heat up 20 degrees and become deadly ☀️Never leave a child or pet unattended in a car (even with windows down) Always look before you lock you car! ☀️If you see a child alone in a car, call 911. The Couit Fire Department is pleased to announce t The Couit Fire Department is pleased to announce that we are one of the many FY24 SENIOR Safe Grant recipients. These funds will assist with our home safety visits and reassurance program. The CFD Reassurance Program has received great praise and focuses on keeping our more senior residents safe in their homes. It includes lockbox installation, smoke detector testing, replacement if needed, and tips on staying safe in your home. We are grateful to the Massachusetts Department of Fire Services and the Office of Governor Maura Healy for their continued support in providing these grants to ensure the life safety and education of if the community.
