Water Quality, PFOA/PFOS

The Cotuit Water Commission and Water Department has previously discussed the emerging concern about these potential contaminants identified by the MassDEP in the CCTimes article of April 18th.   While we do not expect to find any evidence of PFAS or PFOS in the Cotuit water supply, we will be requesting funds for new testing in our FY2020 budget, to be voted at the District Meeting on May 29, 2019.   The contamination cited in the news article in Mashpee and Hyannis are separate and distinct parts of the Sagamore Lens of the Cape Cod Aquifer and Cotuit’s drinking water does not contain any underground flow from these areas.   We will report our test results next year to the public, upon completion.

Signed,

Mark Robinson,

Commissioner

Notice Of Meeting/Agenda

Board Of Water Commissioners

Meeting Date: Tuesday, April 16, 2019  7:30pm

Freedom Hall, 976 Main Street, Cotuit MA

AGENDA

The Cotuit-Santuit Civic Association will be hosting the Board of Water Commissioners and representatives from the Engineering firm of Tata & Howard to introduce the new rate and billing schedule that will be effective as of July 1st. We encourage all district residents to attend.

2019 Rate Proposal

At the request of the Prudential Committee of the Cotuit Fire District, the Cotuit Water Commission authorized a study in 2018 by its consulting engineers Tata & Howard to examine making the Water Department more reliant on revenues from water use (ratepayer base fees and use rates) and less on District taxes.  The study found that Cotuit’s rates are well below those of comparable districts and towns on the Cape.  The Water Commission is proposing an increase in base fees and use for Cotuit homeowners and other water users, beginning July 1, 2019.  The goal is to make the Water Department more self-sufficient for its capital and operational costs.

We are providing a series of informational sessions and materials to explain the proposal.  This postcard will be included with the March 1st bill notifying residents of several opportunities to learn more about the proposed rate structure.  Documents regarding the proposal will be posted here when they are available.  The Water Commissioners will meet again on Wednesday, March 20th at 5:30 pm (location TBD due to pending repairs at Freedom Hall) to finalize the proposal and a public information meeting will be hosted by the Cotuit Civic Association on April 16th at 7:30pm at Freedom Hall in Cotuit.

We encourage you to invite your neighbors and attend these information sessions to learn more about the new rate proposal.
